The New Saints Under 19’s beat Gap Connah’s Quay three two yesterday in the third round of the FAW Welsh Youth Cup.
Steve Evans’ team stared well with lots of possession but went behind after a wonderful goal from the visitors. Soon after Rhys Cooper equalised after some good work from Ryan Pryce.
Minutes later, Jordan Wells received a controversial red card after he was alleged to have been the last man after he brought down one of the opposition. However, The Saints used the dismissal to spur them on and Cooper gave his side the lead after he coolly slotted in from close range.
On the hour mark, TNS made it three. James Jones’ looping header found the bottom corner but The Nomads wouldn’t lie down and pulled a goal back straight away after Ryan Edkins failed to keep the ball out and therefore created a tense finish.
Evans’ brave Saints continued to battle and despite having to resist a lot of late pressure, they wonderfully held on to the result to clinch a quarter final spot.
‘Evo’ was full of praise for his young team and said, ‘I thought we were superb today in terms of sticking together and digging deep, especially at the end. We possibly could have killed the game off in the first half but the way the lads reacted after going down to ten men was first class and we thoroughly deserved the win. I would like to say a big well done to the lads’.
The team that started the game was made up of Ryan Pryce, Ryan Edkins, Adam Davies, Aaron Simms, Jordan Wells, Ryan Kershaw, Rhys Cooper, Fisnik Hajdari, Taylor James, Ben Richards and Dylan Jones.
