Saints draw a blank

The New Saints drew nil nil with Carmarthen Town on a wet and windy night in Port Talbot.

The match which was played at Port Talbot’s GenQuip stadium began slowly with both sides struggling to overcome the terrible weather conditions. Sam Finley, Chris Seargeant and Aeron Edwards all powered long range shots wide inside the opening ten minutes as the rain continued to pour down.

Craig Harrison’s champions controlled the first half and despite enjoying large periods of possession, TNS couldn’t find a break through.

The uneventful first half ended with another long range shot from Seargeant and the sides went into the break level.

The Old Gold brought Christian Dodge and Luke Bowen on at half time but just like the first half, Mark Aizlewood’s men struggled to retain possession of the ball.

After an hour had been played Greg Draper nearly broke the deadlock. The striker had been expertly picked out by Finley and the TNS number nine coolly took the ball down in the area but although his first shot was wonderfully blocked, the striker forced Steven Cann into tipping the ball over from close range, after the rebound had fell kindly for the Kiwi.

With 20 minutes left, Ryan Fraughan replaced Finley but with Carmarthen defending for their lives, The Saints couldn’t seem to find a goal which would surely have secured the points.

The Oswestry based club threw everything they had at Carmarthen in the final ten minutes and even the introduction of Alex Darlington didn’t result in a goal.

However, with three minutes left on the clock, Carl Evans headed over for Carmarthen as they attempted to steal the points.

The home side then had another chance to win the match but substitute Doidge could only head over from close range as The Saints had to settle for a point.
