Doidge denies Saints

The New Saints finished off the 2013/2014 Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League with a defeat thanks to an excellent header from Christian Doidge.

Carmarthen’s Doidge opened the scoring with his seventeenth League goal of the season and that proved to be the only goal of the game as TNS slipped to a one nil away defeat at the hands of Carmarthen.

The first chance of the match fell to the home side but Liam Thomas smashed over from close range, after being picked out by Kyle Bassett.

Minutes later, Thomas managed to hit the bar from inside the six yard box as his side attempted to break the deadlock.

However, within seconds, Luke Cummings headed into his own goal but the goal was disallowed. Mike Wilde was adjudged to have pushed Cummings in the build up and Dean John ruled the goal out.

The home side continued to push forward in the rearranged fixture but despite creating the better chances during the first half, Mark Aizlewood’s side went into the break level.

Craig Harrison replaced Wilde and Sam Finley with Greg Draper and Ryan Kershaw respectively but in what was a disjointed start to the second half, the deadlock was finally broken. With just under an hour gone, Doidge expertly headed in from close range after latching onto a wonderful cross.

Having scored the opening goal, Carmarthen continued to push forward and ten minutes later, nearly scored a second. An aimless ball forward bounced randomly higher than Paul Harrison expected and nearly ended up going in.

With The Saints struggling to get control of the ball in the game, Cortez Belle somehow headed wide from only a couple of yards out as Harrison replaced Aeron Edwards with Fisnik Hajdari.

Substitute Paul Fowler nearly doubled the advantage with near enough his first touch of the game. The Carmarthen number eight fired just wide from the edge of the box.

Late on in the game Ryan Edwards raced through on goal and attempted an audacious lob from range. The ball dipped and for a second appeared as though it may have been going in but landed just over the bar.

Edwards’ chance was the last piece of action in what was the last League game of the season for the Welsh Champions.
