The New Saints advanced into the third round of the Word Cup after beating Airbus UK by two goals to one at Park Hall Stadium.
A goal from Scott Quigley and an own goal from Airbus gave TNS a two goal lead however a late goal from substitute Glenn Rule, nearly forced extra time but Craig Harrison’s side held on and secured their place in the next round.
Both sides started the game evenly but with a quarter of an hour gone, neither side had manage to create anything clear cut.
Midway through the first half, Connell Rawlinson brought the ball forward and fired a powerful shot from long range just over the bar.
In what was a very even affair, the young Quigley broke the deadlock after deflecting an excellent strike from Ryan Kershaw into the goal. The centre midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the box and smashed in a low shot from the 20 yards out which touched Quigley on it’s way in to give his side the lead in the cup tie.
A minute before the half time break, Michael Roddy latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box but despite controlling the ball well, he managed to shoot over.
The second half started with The Saints looking for a second goal and nearly managed to get one thanks to Ryan Edwards. The home side broke forward with pace but Airbus managed to clear thanks to some excellent defending.
However, a minute later, the second goal did arrive. Adrian Cieslewicz sprinted down the right wing and picked out Fraughan, who managed to deflect onto an Airbus player and the ball bounced into the empty net from two yards out.
In two crazy minutes at Park Hall, the woodwork was hit twice. Firstly Matty McGinn found space on the edge of the TNS box and rattled the cross bar with Chris Mullock helpless and Scott Quigley struck the post from a tight angle as the game exploded into life.
With ten minutes left to play, Kai Edwards handballed the ball on the edge of the box and Mullock was forced into a great save. Substitute Rule managed to launch a powerful shot into the bottom corner but the former Cefn Druids expertly palmed it out.
Rule did manage to get on the score sheet moments later. The midfielder wonderfully picked out the bottom corner to give his side a chance in the game.
However, deep into stoppage time and despite the visitors pushing forward in search of a late equaliser, the goal never came and TNS advanced into the third round of the Word Cup.
