The New Saints Ladies started the 2014/2015 season on the right note, thanks to a first half goal from Lizzy White against Leamington Lions Ladies at Park Hall Stadium on Sunday 31st August. This was the first match under new manager Joe Thompson. Lizzy White, Abi Cottam and Nisa Mendez all made there full debuts for the Saints.
The New Saints started brightly after a good pre season and pressed the visitors early, restricting them to long balls over the top. The Saints chances came thick and fast but they were unable to put the ball past the Leamington goalkeeper. The Saints would be rewarded on the half hour mark when a cross from the right hand side was met by Lizzy White who got in front of her marker to fire the ball past Gardner in the Leamington goal. The lead could soon have been doubled when a corner was cleared only as far as Sophie Edwards who’s shot was blocked on the penalty spot. The Saints continued to press for the second goal but the Lions held on to half time where the Saints lead by one goal to nil.
In the second half, neither side looked like creating many chances, with both sides losing the ball frequently in the midfield area. The Saints never looked threatened and a through ball to Emily Ridge caused Lemington some problems but the chance went begging going straight to the goalkeeper. Soon after Abi Cottam broke through the defence, putting the ball past the keeper and the left hand post by mere inches. A long ball again caught the Lions defence off guard when the out rushing keeper was beaten to the ball by Emily Ridge, the game look sealed but the ball went out wide, only for Ridge to cross it into the box and the defence clear it away. With the Saints not looking like conceding all match, heartbreak was nearly a reality with Leamington’s only clear cut chance of the the second half. The Lions were throwing everything forward and the Saints defense was broke to see a three versus one situation against goalkeeper Charlotte Edmunds. Edmunds stood her ground and the shot went wide of the goal which meant The New Saints would finish with all three points.
The Saints next travel to Coventarians in the FA Cup Preliminary Round next Sunday (3rd September), 2pm kick off.
