The New Saints played out a 1-1 draw against Newtown at Park Hall Stadium.
The Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League fixture was an even enough affair despite The Saints dominating the possession stats.
Chris Hughes’ side were well drilled and were forced to defend for large periods of the game but despite a goal from Aeron Edwards, were able to hold on for a surprise point.
The visitors started brightly and opened the scoring after Shane Sutton headed in from a corner. The Newtown Captain latched onto a great corner and powerfully connected with the ball to give his side a surprise lead at Park Hall stadium.
The Saints began to control the possession and soon after should have equalised. Adrian Cieslewicz expertly skipped past Ashely Wells and picked out Greg Draper who was unable to get his shot on target from five yards out.
However, with 27 minutes played, Craig Harrison’s side equalised. Simon Spender and Aeron Edwards played a neat one two which ended up with the energetic midfielder converting from just outside the six yard box.
With ten minutes remaining in the first half, The Saints had the ball in the back of the net but the referee disallowed the goal after a Ryan Fraughan handball in the box.
TNS nearly took the lead on the stroke of half time but Fraughan’s excellent strike rattled against the bar and bounced clear. The former Tranmere Rovers winger found space outside the box and unleased a superb curling effort that went very close.
Newtown defended very well throughout the second half and didn’t allow The Saints to create anything clear cut.
Alex Darlington was replaced by Scott Ruscoe who was brought on in search of a goal and nearly managed to beat David Jones within seconds of coming on. However, his shot went over the bar after Newtown had failed to deal with a corner.
The Oswestry based side continued to push forward in search of the winner but were unable to find a way past a strong Robins defence.
In second half stoppage time, Kai Edwards struck a powerful effort from 25 yards out and then Mike Wilde headed towards goal but Jones was equal to both efforts to ensure the match finished one all.
