Manchester City 4 TNS 1 (25/10/14)
TNS 15’s made the trip to Platt Lane home of Man City on Saturday morning and played a mixture of City’s 15’s and 16’s.
TNS had worked hard in training on pressing the ball and recovery runs in preparation for today’s game.
The game started with City on the attack from kick off but the lads defended well and put the training into practice on the pitch. TNS started to grow in confidence and started to play football, moving the ball quickly and attacked with purpose. TNS had a lot of possession and deservedly took the lead through Sean Phelan. Will Evans won the ball at left back and played an inch perfect pass to Ryan Smith who played a 1-2 with Will Dunne and spread the play out wide to Cameron Simpson. Cam beat his marker and crossed for Tom Hanna to knock down for Sean who with his back to goal, kicked it over his head and into the back of the net. The goal gave the lads an extra spring in their step and kept the ball away from the City players. As the 1st period was coming to an end City scored with a mix up in the area, allowed the striker to tap in with the last kick off the period.
Changes were made and the new players got straight into the game with Zak Dobie linking up well in midfield with Will Dunne. Harry Jenks was causing the City defenders trouble with his movement and pace up front and Peter Fletcher just behind, had an excellent effort superbly saved by the City keeper from 25 yards out. Tom Hanna and Junior Gabi were creating some good chances down the wings for TNS. Zak Dobie had a couple of long range efforts blocked by the City defenders. TNS pressed the ball well and were forcing City to play long. City made some changes and the new players were very energetic and tactically aware. A long ball was cleared but somehow the City striker somehow lobbed the keeper. TNS come under a lot of pressure now with City stepping up a gear. The lads defended well as a team and seen out the last 10 minutes of the2nd period.
The team talk was just to keep playing football, working hard for each other and force City to play backwards. City come out again with a high tempo, keeping the ball well, passing all over the pitch. TNS kept their discipline and made City work hard to try and break them down. Ben Crump in goal for TNS made a fine save from a long range effort. TNS continued to look for the equaliser they fully deserved, going close through Will Dunne, Zak Dobie, Peter Fletcher and Steve Macdonnell having 1 cleared off the line and the keeper saving from the headed rebound. TNS made final changes and as the game was coming into its final stages City scored 2 more goals. The game ended with City winning 4-1.
Steve Monk commented “The result definitely doesn’t reflect the game. I am really proud of the lads today, as I have been all season. They have played some excellent football throughout the game, myself and Steve Benyon worked on pressing the ball from the front and recovery runs at training on Wednesday and the lads put it in to practice today. Ben has only made 1 save all game, we have had some excellent efforts through Zak Dobie, Will Dunne, Peter Fletcher and Steve Macdonnell. The lads are a little bit disappointed with the end result, but I have told them they should be proud of their performance. It was a very good team performance and the lads were a credit to the club. We will go again Sunday against Connahs Quay Nomads and we travel to play Cardiff City on Thursday 30th.”
