The New Saints Ladies bowed out of the FA Cup in the second round at Park Hall.
The Saints played host to FA Women’s Premier League side Derby County Ladies in the FA Cup second round.
Last season the Saints faced Stoke City Ladies at the same stage of the competition and were looking for an improved result this season.
Derby County Ladies took the lead in the fifth minute when a ball down the right hand side beat the Saints defence, as the Saints defenders came across to cover, they left Jemma Grimmsdell at the back post free to tap in from twelve yards, past Charlotte Edmunds.
The Saints equalised just after the half hour mark. A corner from the left hand side was headed towards goal by Lizzie White, which took a deflection past the Derby goalkeeper.
Straight after the restart The Saints took the lead when Emily Ridge broke the Derby defence after a ball from Jade Hill. Ridge slotted past the outstretched goalkeeper.
Derby County did respond on the 56th minute when a corner wasn’t cleared and Cara Newtown made the most of it, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
Derby then took the lead in the 71st minute when a poor back pass was cut out by Melisa Johnson who rounded the goalkeeper to tap into the empty net.
Johnson then added her second three minutes later, firing past Charlotte Edmunds from the edge of the box.
The game was sealed with three minutes to go when Aimee Perry converted after a defensive mix up.
This is the Saints first loss under Joe Thompson and after the game he commented, ‘I am extremely proud of everyone in the squad today, taking the occasion in our stride. All the girls should be extremely proud and I want them to know how proud Will and Myself are of them. We battled, harried and were as good as a premier league team today and in my opinion it was just fitness which let us down which is understandable. We haven’t played in a month and in the last 10 minutes that showed. But that was the only difference.’
Man of the match went to Lizzie White, Joe commented, ‘I thought Lizzie was outstanding for us along with everyone else but unfortunately you can only pick one’. He went on to add, ‘Onwards and upwards now onto a massive two weeks in the league to put ourselves in good stead to win it. That was and still is our primary focus and goal.’
