TNS Ladies Win Again

The New Saints Ladies had to battle to get the three points from second bottom Wednesfield Town Ladies at Amos Lane.

The Amos Lane pitch forced the Saints into adapting their game plan to suit the conditions but this didn’t slow the Saints’ momentum down in the early exchanges, creating the better chances. The visitors did take the lead on the eleventh minute after Charlotte Edmunds threw the ball out to Hannah Yates who then picked Sarah Burke out down the right hand side, Burke played the ball inside to Jade Hill who slotted into Emily Ridge, Ridge then broke the defence but her shot was saved by the Wednesfield goalkeeper but Sam Berry was on hand to tap the ball into the net. The hosts were level eleven minutes later, after a dubious free kick was awarded against Sarah Burke, the ball was then switched to their right wing resulting in them winning a throw in on the Saints eighteen yard box. The resulting throw saw the Wednesfield player work a cross and poor marking by the Saints saw the striker tap the ball past Charlotte Edmunds. Just after the half hour mark and the Saints were back in front. A corner from Laura Morris saw the ball was met by Sophie Edwards who put the ball in the six yard box where Jade Hill was the first to react, half volleying into the goal. The visitors had their third a minute later. A cross from Laura Morris wasn’t dealt with by the Town defence and Emily Ridge slotted the ball under the goalkeeper. A fourth goal was added after 41 minutes, Kate Huntbach won the ball in defence to start the Saints attack, Sarah Burke’s pass broke the Wednesfield defence and Emily Ridge tapped the ball passed the out coming goalkeeper to get her second of the game. Two minutes later the Saints completed their first half scoring, Sophie Edwards playing a through ball into the path of Laura Morris who placed the ball across the face of the goal and into the corner of the net. Emily Ridge then could have added her third of the afternoon but it was ruled out for offside. Fifteen minutes of injury time was played in the first half which tested the fitness levels of both sides.

The second half saw the Saints come at the hosts once again and with in three minutes of the restart add their sixth of the afternoon. Laura Morris latched onto a poor pass and played in Sarah Burke who placed the ball into the keepers near post. Three minutes later and Town had pulled a goal back. A long punt down field saw the striker get away from the defence, Nic Walford tried to stop the players run but her slide tackle saw the ball bobble past Charlotte Edmunds and the striker tapped home.

The Saints looked for a reply and a Saints free kick taken by Nicola Walford saw Emily Ridge have to deal with a bouncing ball against the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper dropped the ball and Ridge put the ball in the empty net but the referee had already given a free kick against the Saints player. Chances came few and far between as the Saints pushed for another goal but nine minutes from time Wednesfield had their third of the game. A cross from the left hand side was half cleared and the Town striker half volleyed the ball past Charlotte Edmunds. The Saints enjoyed the majority of the play after the goal but after 114 minutes had done enough to take all three points back to North Shropshire.

After the game manager Joe Thompson commented, saying. “What a strange game of football. The pitch was horrendous but that’s no excuse from us as both teams had to play on it. We just altered our shape to play in different areas. But considering the first half consisted of a 61 minute half and the fact we played over 110 minutes of football, shows it was a strange game of football. There players picked up what seemed to be some bad injuries for the amount of time they were down for so hope they’re all okay.”

He went on to say, “We had to scrap and battle and fight a lot like we did last week and we’ve done it again today. Credit to them all, they played and were up for it, but that’s something you have to deal with when you’re near the top of the league you’re there to be shot at. Not a classic game but one which gives us another three points towards the cause which is very pleasing. The stop start nature of the game didn’t help us get into any rhythm but as I said we got the job done which is really all that matters. There was a stand out player for us and a real captains performance from Amy today she was absolutely everywhere and was superb. Again we roll on and keep going one more down towards the ultimate goal.”

The New Saints Ladies next face Kingshurst Sporting Ladies at Park Hall Stadium next Sunday, 2pm kick off.
