The New Saints Ladies booked their place in the West Midlands Regional League Cup Semi Final after a 5-1 victory away at Knowle Ladies.
The terrible weather conditions made it tricky for both sides, with the Saints trying to play their normal style of play and it wasn’t long before leading scorer Emily Ridge opened the scoring for the Shropshire side.
The striker ran onto a through ball and opened the scoring. Knowle Ladies then hit back, a free kick wasn’t cleared and after bobbling around the Saints’ box, the ball was tapped home from close range to get the hosts back level.
Megan Haynes then added a Saints second in style. A ball over the top saw Haynes hold off two defenders whilst watching the ball come over her shoulder, before controlling the ball dead. Haynes then lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to regain the lead. Haynes then got her second of the afternoon latching onto a through ball after good play in the Knowle half, before slotting past the goalkeeper. Emily Ridge then added her second of the game minutes before half time giving the Saints a commanding lead going into the second half.
The second half saw the Saints control the game once again, but with conditions worsening play was broken up easily and the tempo of the game reduced dramatically. With twenty minutes to go the game was sealed, Sam Berry getting her first of the game ended the chances of a fight back into the match and booked the Saints’ place in the semi-final.
After the game manager Joe Thompson commented, “Today was a real professional performance, in difficult conditions, from the whole squad. Horrific conditions and apart from the first fifteen minutes we completely dominated the entire game.”
Thompson then added, “To be in a semi-final is pleasing and all we cared about going into the game. Knowle were a dangerous side and played some nice neat football at times, but we were able to snuff out any danger they posed to us. Hannah Yates had a particularly good game and deserved the player of the match award.”
The New Saints Ladies travel once again to Knowle to face them in the league, 2pm kick off.
