Dean John from Swansea has been chosen to referee the 128th Welsh Cup Final in association with Tenovus between Mid Wales rivals The New Saints and Newtown FC.
“It is a dream come true to referee the showpiece final once, but twice is beyond my wildest dream;” said John.
John started refereeing in the Swansea Senior league in 1998 and then progressed to the Welsh League, before joining the Welsh Premier League full list in 2005.
He has also officiated in the Europa League Group stages and represented Wales at the Semi-pro Four Nations Tournament in England, refereeing Scotland matches against Ireland and England. John has also been on the referee exchange programme, refereeing games in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
“It’s an old cliché but we (the team) will treat it as a normal game and prepare in a professional manner, both teams are renowned for playing good football and the excellent surface at Latham Park will also add to the special occasion.
Dean will be assisted on the day by two FIFA assistant referees, in Aberdare’s Lewiss Edwards and Daniel Beckett of Llanelli. His 4th official at the Final on Saturday 2nd May, is Iwan Griffith from Conwy.
