The New Saints Ladies wrapped up an emphatic West Midlands Premier League Cup semi final victory against Leamington Lions Ladies at the New Windmill ground.
The Saints started off the brighter of the two sides causing the Leamington defence some problems early on. After just ten minutes the visitors were in front, great build up play saw Sam Berry slot past the Leamington goalkeeper.
The Saints didn’t look too convincing after the goal though. Soon Charlotte Edmunds was called upon to make a double save to keep the Shropshire side in the lead and the Saints managed to get into the half time break one nil up.
The Saints looked a completely different side as they came out for the second half and within one minute Emily Ridge had broke through the defence to double the Saints’ lead.
Leamington must still have been in the dressing room as straight from kick off the Shropshire side won the ball back and Ridge netted her second of the afternoon. The TNS top goal scorer then only needed nine more minutes to complete her hat-trick and score her thirty third of the season.
The Saints soon had their fifth goal. A cross from the right hand side flew over the defenders head into the feet of Kelly Dovaston, she too the ball down, beat a player and had a shot across the floor past the goalkeeper into the bottom left hand corner. This was Dovaston’s first senior goal of her career, another successful product of the Saints youth system.
Sophie Edwards then added the sixth goal with thirteen minutes to go, Edwards has scored seven times this season, six coming after the Derby County Ladies FA Cup game and the Saints would finish where they started with Sam Berry completing the scoring two minutes from time.
The New Saints Ladies progress to the West Midlands Premier League Cup Final where they meet Birmingham & West Midland Police at Stone Dominoes FC on Sunday 24th May.
The Saints face Birmingham & West Midlands Police next week at Shrewsbury College, in what could be the league deciding game. The kick off is at 2.30pm.
