Walking Football Cup

The New Saints Community Foundation hosted their second Walking Football Festival on Sunday 31sy May, only Shropshire’s second of its kind.

The event attracted many teams from far and wide with all profits going to local projects.

The day saw teams arrive to register for 9.30am with a 10am KO. All teams played a minimum of five games within a group stage, then play offs, consolation cup and finals.

Five teams took part including Rochdale, Shrewsbury Walking Football FC, DNS (Derwen New Saints), TNS and The New Old Buzzards.

The Semi-Final was a closely fought match between The Derwen New Saints and Shrewsbury Walking Footballers FC, with Shrewsbury winning by 1-0 to progress to the final.

The overall winners were Shrewsbury Walking Football FC, some of which attend the weekly sessions held at TNS’s ground. They fought off a tough side from Rochdale, the Stroke Strollers, who are all recovering from strokes themselves by 2-0.

The Consolation Cup saw TNS Walking Footballers take on The New Old Buzzards with the Buzzards being the victors winning 2-0.

The tournament was followed by hospitality in the clubs suite with food and a presentation.

The day was a great successful with over 50 men still enjoying the beautiful game on a different level.

Shelly McGlinchey commented, ’It was a real pleasure to host this second walking football festival on behalf of the Community Foundation, it was great to see so many men still able to play football and get so much enjoyment out of it. We look forward to the next one in the Autumn.’

I will be hosting another festival in October, the date will be confirmed once the first teams fixtures are released, I will know availability for the pitch then. I would also like to thank the officials on the day who did an amazing job, Jonathan Matthews and Johnny Davies.’

Sessions are held every week, Mondays 12.30-2pm and Thursdays 8-9pm,just £2.50, all made welcome.
