TNS Ladies Back To Winning Ways

The New Saints Ladies looked to get back to winning ways after drawing 0-0 at Lye Town last weekend.

The Saints got off to the best possible start, being awarded a penalty after just sixteen seconds. However the resulting penalty was well saves. It didn’t take long for TNS to response positively to this, Sophie Davies fired home from the edge of the box on the tenth minute to see the Saints take the lead. Much like the opening day of the season, the Shropshire side enjoyed large amounts of possession and just after the half hour mark and the Saints doubled their lead. Some nice combination play saw Sophie Davies fire past the goalkeeper to add her second of the game. The Saints were cruising to victory just seven minutes later, Laura Morris breaking free of the defence to shoot across the face of the Walsall goal. The first half scoring was complete just before the final whistle, Emily Ridge lobbing the out rushing goalkeeper to see the Saints go into the break 4-0 up.

The second half became a more closely fought contest. The Saints still saw more of the ball but Walsall looked a threat on the break and just under half way through the half they had pulled a goal back. A low shot past Ceri Evans in the Saints goals gave the hosts a lifeline. The hosts looked to add to this goal thirteen minutes from time. A mix up in the box saw the ball eventually end up in the Saints net to bring the score back to 4-2 to the Shropshire side. The Saints settled their nerves six minutes from time. Maddie Jones cutting into the box and slotting past the Walsall goalkeeper to create a three goal cushion once again between the two sides. The Saints then saw out the game.

After the game manager Joe Thompson commented, “It’s really pleasing to see stuff we work on the training ground come through on the pitch. A change in formation and a great performance particularly first half. We controlled the game and they resorted to just basically kicking us for the first ten minutes. But we kept our head and kept our composure and put the game to bed by half time”.

“After the disappointment of last week I’m so happy to be back to winning ways and still unbeaten. Break from it next week as we are in FA Cup action and come up against a team from the league above who no doubt will be looking to avoid being beaten by an underdog.”
