Looking Back At Oswestry Town

LOOKING BACK AT OSWESTRY TOWN – with Mike Clarke

Looking at this weeks Non League Paper and the article about the F.A.Challenge Trophy back in 1969/70, got me rooting to sort out our performance in that very first season of the grand competition.

Oswestry then in the Cheshire League had a home draw against N.P.League side NETHERFIELD (now Kendal Town). The N.P.L. was only in its second year and we went into the game as real underdogs.

The visitors had ex Blues stalwart Alf Craig(Commander) in their ranks and the Manager was Les Campbell who had worn our colours the previous season.

Blues won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Pat Kinsella and Geoff Lloyd. Team :- Kelly, Peters, Broadhead, Kinsella, R.Davies, Porter, Potts, Lloyd, G.Davies, Jones, Hughes, Bebb.

Progress came to a halt in round 2, when we lost 3-2 at Midland league side ARNOLD TOWN. Prior to that game Eric Potts had been sold to Sheffield Wednesday, Eric went on to make many hundreds of league appearances for several clubs.

Two Shropshire connections in the Final, Macclesfield Town beating Telford United at Wembley, and part of the victorious Macc. side was former Oswestry star, Merrick Corfield who they signed from us two seasons earlier. Merrick had been voted Sportsman of the year and awarded the Macc. Express gold medal and a silver cup.
