The New Saints of Oswestry Town have been recognised as one of Europe’s elite sides by an online club ranking website.
The latest rankings published by www.footballdatabase.com show the Oswestry based side occupying the 50th position in the European rankings, ahead of the likes AC Milan, Olympique Marseille, Werder Bremen, Feyenoord and Galatasaray.
Incredibly, Craig Harrison’s Saints are placed 50th overall in the global rankings and are perched in the top spot of the Welsh club rankings.
The points-based ranking is dictated by an internationally recognised rating system which evaluates a club’s performance against its competitors over a non-fixed period of time and calculates the probability of their next win, defeat or draw. Effectively, this calculation reveals a team’s true strength relative to its competitors and allows the data to be compiled into a rankings system.
Predictably the European top 10 is comprised of heavyweights such as Bayern München, Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid, Juventus, Arsenal and FC Porto.
The Saints’ Welsh rivals, Swansea City and Cardiff City find themselves in 90th and 364thposition respectively in the global standings.
Club Chairman Mike Harris expressed his delight at his club rubbing shoulders with such eminent European clubs, ‘It feels very good to be recognised in these rankings and I believe it shows the growth of the club based on our results and successes over the years.’
Harris added that, ‘It is not something we actively set out to look for but it was very pleasing to see ourselves so high in the rankings and it certainly highlights our progress as a club.’
TNS are currently top of the Dafabet Sports Welsh Premier League and are on course for a tenth WPL crown this season.
