The Community Foundation held their annual Walking Football Festival on Saturday 28th November 2015, in what can only be described as challenging conditions. The heavy rain and wind were with us all day but this did not deter over 100 men and women travelling from all parts of the country to compete.
After an initial group phase knockout all teams progressed to the next round of the Walking Football Cup or the Consolation Cup.
Following a closely fought out battle Beechcroft, from Birmingham, were crowned the winners of the Walking Football Cup beating Leicester Silver Foxes on penalties 3-1 after a no score draw, while Rochdale Strollers won The Consolation Cup seeing off Shrewsbury WFC 2-0.
Once all teams had dried off and warmed up they were treated to curry and rice before the presentation. Many stayed to watch the televised game between TNS and Airbus UK Broughton before travelling home.
In difficult playing conditions all teams entered into the spirit of it and displayed some great sportsmanship.
Shelly McGlinchey, health & active lifestyles coordinator for the Foundation would like to thank all of the teams who travelled to compete and support the festival. All money raised will go to support more projects locally. At each event the numbers who enter keeps growing and it is great to see more and more people getting active and enjoying the beautiful game at a slightly slower pace. The next event will be held in May 2016 date to be confirmed.
