The New Saints Ladies started the new year with a convincing victory at home to Lye Town Ladies.
The game was moved from Park Hall to Shrewsbury College 3G pitch to ensure the game would go ahead and the hosts were glad it did. Just minutes into the game and a teasing ball from the right hand side saw the Lye defender put past her own goalkeeper. With just nineteen minutes on the clock the Saints doubled their lead. A well struck effort from leading goal scorer Emily Ridge flew past the outstretched Lye goalkeeper.
The Saints then up the tempo at the start of the second half and just two minutes into the half Maddie Jones slotted past the goalkeeper. Jones then added her second fifteen minutes into the half breaking free of the Lye defence to fire past the goalkeeper. Emily Ridge then added the Saints fifth goal before Sarah Burke rounded off the scoring.
The result saw the Saints move within three points of the top of the league with two games in hand over the leaders, Crusaders Ladies.
Manager Joe Thompson commented of the Saints first win of 2016 saying, “It was nice to be back on the pitch today, coming up against a good Lye side, resilient and quick on the break, but we played some good football today.”
“Our link up play was excellent and we took our chances well. I am very pleased with the performance today. Maddie, Emily and Laura were excellent but Sam Berry had an outstanding performance today, having a hand in all the goals.”
“We keep going and striving for the bigger goal”
