The New Saints Ladies have booked themselves in their second cup final of the season as they overcame Wrockwardine Wood Ladies in the semi final of the West Midlands Premier League Cup.
The Saints got off to the best possible start in the Shropshire derby against Wrockwardine, despite scoring against the run of play. The clubs leading scorer Emily Ridge slotting past the hosts goalkeeper to see the Saints take a deserved early lead. From then on in there only looked to be one team in it, the Saints moving the ball well through all areas of the pitch. Shortly after and the Saints doubled their lead. Louisa Anderson’s looping shot from thirty five yards beat the Wrockwardine Wood goalkeeper and bounced into the net to see the league leaders double their advantage.
The North Shropshire side continued the second half as they left off the first and created numerous chances but were unable to add to their lead. With the Saints pushing for another goal, it would be leading scorer Emily Ridge who would add her second of the game. A low shot from inside the box beat the goalkeeper to her right hand side. TNS then felt hard done by not to add a forth straight after. A corner from the right hand side saw Sarah Burke chest the ball into the net but the referee disallowed the goal for a hand ball by Burke. The Saints defence held firm and restricted the hosts to having no shots on the Ceri Evan’s goal frustrating Wrockwardine. The visitors would get their fourth goal and it would be Emily Ridge, scoring her forty third goal of the season, who would conclude the scoring.
After the game manager Joe Thompson commented, “What a performance that was. The pitch wasn’t great and we had to adapt to that but we managed to play some decent football.”
“Scoring against the run of play kick started us and there was only ever one team in it from then on. “We showed great character, bottle and determination when we needed to. To win a semi final that comfortably is a real credit to the ladies”.
“We are really looking forward to the run in now, four games and three trophies to be won. We need to embrace and enjoy it because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity”.
The New Saints Ladies travel to Wednesfield Town Ladies next Sunday, knowing that a win will secure the league title for the Shropshire side.
