The New Saints of Oswestry Town are delighted to announce the signing of the highly rated Tom Matthews from Queens Park Rangers after the club successfully negotiated the transfer.
The very capable defender is a bright England prospect and recently played against Manchester United star Marcus Rashford in the Under 21’s FA Youth Cup.
Last season he was the U18 captain before progressing into a regular U21 player having joined from Norwich City in 2014 but has now decided to switch from Under 21 football in order to play UEFA Champions League football with TNS.
Born in Norwich, the 19 year old Matthews can play in a number of defensive positions and has put pen to paper on a two year contract with Craig Harrison’s side.
Highly rated Tom was identified by the Guardian newspaper in October 2014 as one of the 20 most promising prospects at Premier League clubs. The Guardian has identified some of the best young talent coming through in the Premier League, picking one player from each club born between 1 September 1997 and 31 August 1998.
TNS Chairman Mike Harris was delighted to complete the transfer and said, ‘We will continue to push to sign the best talent available to help us reach our goals.’
With The Saints dominating domestic football, the WPL Champions are keen to make sure they continue pushing forward in the world’s greatest club competition, the UEFA Champions League.
TNS are determined to increase the quality of the squad to improve the chances of progressing further in Europe and reaching the ultimate goal, the group stages of a European competition.
TNS will enter the Champions League in the first qualifying round with the draw set to take place in Geneva on Monday the 20th of June.
