Cardiff Metropolitan University FC v The New Saints FC – Match Preview

Following on from the last away game at Barry Town United, it’s back to the south Wales coast again, as this Friday (September 15 2017) it’s destination-capital for the champions of Wales.

In their JD Welsh Premier League debut season last time round, Cardiff Metropolitian University FC just failed to emulate Llandudno from the year before, as they narrowly missed out on qualifying for Europe.

Reaching the final courtesy of a 2-1 victory on the road at Carmarthen Town, they failed to take a Europa League place, as they lost to Bangor City 1-0.

With four games gone so far this season in Wales’ top-flight league, the Archers find themselves second in the table, ahead of fourth-placed TNS on goal difference. With the leaders Llandudno on ten points and the following four teams on nine, it’s incredibly close at the top.

The New Saints’ last visit to Cyncoed was on March 18 earlier this year. Although the title had already been won, there was no taking the foot off the pedal, as the champions recorded a 5-0 victory.

A Darlington brace within four early minutes, followed by a Barnett own goal halfway through the first period saw TNS go into the break 3-0 to the good. Within a minute of the second half getting underway, Draper made it four and Cieslewicz completed the job just past the hour mark.

Although TNS’ record so far against Cardiff Met is excellent, Scott Ruscoe is not taking anything for granted: “They’re a good, young, fit side. They pass the ball well and it’s a tight pitch. The fans get behind them and it’s always a tough game. They don’t concede many goals and I’m looking at a tough game on Friday.”

The New Saints go into the game on a good run of form, with four straight victories in all competitions. The last three JD Welsh Premier League games have seen eight goals scored with none conceded.

If you’re making the trip to the capital, have a safe journey but if you’re not, don’t miss out. As always, TNS Radio will be bringing you commentary on the game, which kicks off at 7.45 pm. The link is on the website under ‘News’ and we look forward to your company.
