On Sunday, September 15 2017, a squad of fifteen travelled to the Dee estuary to face Flint Town United in MD 4 in the JD WPL Development League.
Once again, reflecting the previous games the average age was just sixteen, with five new faces in the squad. Up against a team that contained players up to two years older, it was a physical struggle at times.
The first half was scrappy at times, and a combination of good Flint defending plus TNS not playing to their usual high standard, meant that the teams went into the break goalless.
The halftime team talk from Steve Benyon was stirring and the players were given a set of objectives for the second period, with winning the game the icing on the cake.
The boxes were ticked – and especially the primary one – as Tom Gray popped up with the only goal of the game.
Following the game, Benyon was full of praise not only for his own side, but also their opponents: “Full credit to all our players, especially the three subs, Dennis, Tom and Sam, who all made a real impact. Well done to Flint as well, who kept probing till the end.”
” The players are starting to adapt to the different demands and training regime, with everyone contributing in a positive and effective manner.”
Looking ahead, the main man from this season, continued: Now on to next week’s training programme as we prepare for Wednesday’s Category 1 game away against Fowler Academy, followed by Sunday’s fixture at home to Prestatyn Town.”
“Again what is pleasing is to see how many talented players have missed out on the squad who certainly deserve a place, but again it goes to show the real strength in depth I have at my disposal following a positive week’s training.” he concluded.
