Yesterday (Wednesday, September 27 2017) at Park Hall, the TNS Professional Phase English Schools and Colleges Football Association (ESCFA) team entertained Newcastle-Under-Lyme.
Competing this season as a Category 1 side, this was their third league game of the campaign, as they looked to get back on track following last week’s result.
However, it wasn’t to be, as Steve Benyon explained: “The boys were looking for a positive response after last Wednesday’s disappointing performance but unfortunately, again, we were not at the races and we conceded a sloppy goal after three failed clearances.”
“The boys were not playing their normal free-flowing football, due partly to a well organised Newcastle side but also because of our naivety and poor decision making.” as he continued in his honest assessment of the performance.
Following the half-time talk, the second period began with the team playing much better football. Again though a mistake, this time in the centre of the pitch, proved to be costly, as the visitors doubled their advantage.
The final twenty minutes, in the words of Benyon, “saw us finally spring into life” as a good strike from Guyguy Maboy reduced the deficit.
However, the frustrations returned as a missed penalty and several scorned opportunities saw the final score 2-1 to the visitors from Staffordshire.
“We bounce back and go again on Sunday away to Caersws in the Welsh Youth Cup, whereby a host of changes will be made to freshen up the squad and provide others with a chance.” concluded Steve Benyon, as he looks to get the team back on track.
