Flint Town United v The New Saints FC – Match Preview

Following Saturday’s 5-0 JD Welsh Premier League victory at Carmarthen Town, it’s back on the road again for The New Saints on Tuesday, October 3 2017. This time it’s a break from league action though, as the Nathaniel MG Cup beckons.

The current holders of the trophy, TNS will be looking to lift the silverware for a fourth consecutive time come next spring. The first hurdle to be crossed though is a trip to Flint Town United, who are currently playing their football in the Huws Gray Alliance.

The New Saints’ last fixture at Cae-y-Castell was against Bala Town, while the new 3G pitch at Maes Tegid was under construction. The game, in September 2016, saw a 2-0 victory recorded, with goals from Parry and Darlington.

Following a good start in north Wales’ second tier with ten points from the opening four matches, Flint find themselves in 9th place (in a 16 team league) with just one win in the last five games.

Managed by Andy Holden, who has a wealth of experience from across the border in the English system, the squad contains names that will be very familiar to fans of the domestic game in Wales. Chris Budrys, Alan Bull, Mark Cadwallader and Stefan Halewood are among a number of players who are now part of the set-up at Flint.

The New Saints’ manager, Scott Ruscoe, confirmed there will be squad rotation for the trip to the Dee estuary: “Yes, there will be changes. We have an important game a few days later and we will mix it, as players get a rest for Saturday. We will use the whole squad.”

On the specific challenge that Flint will present, Ruscoe took his usual position of recognising the strength of the opposition and giving them full respect: “They are a decent side… physical… like to get the ball forward. They’ve got some good players.”

Saturday’s hat-trick hero, Chris Seargeant echoed his manager’s sentiments: “There are no easy games. It’s away from home and we won’t be complacent. We want to win every cup and we will take it seriously.”

If you’re not at the game on Tuesday, don’t miss out. There will be commentary on TNS Radio, with the link here on our website.
