This Sunday (October 8 2017) sees an intriguing tie, as The New Saints Ladies entertain their Shrewsbury Town counterparts in the A5 derby. The FA Cup tie also sees the return of Pete Wilson, who since leaving Park Hall earlier in the year is now the man at the helm for the Shrews’ women.
The Saints have had a blistering start to the season, winning all five league games to date and beating Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup. The only defeat was the home reversal to Leicester City Women in the next round.
Shrewsbury have also had an excellent start to 2017/2018, as their 100% record only came to an end last weekend when losing by the odd-goal to Sutton Coldfield.
Not only are the Shropshire bragging rights at stake on Sunday but both sides will be looking to make a statement with the quality of their football. As far as goals are concerned, fifty one have been scored between the teams so far this season, with TNS finding the net on thirty occasions compared to Shrewsbury’s twenty one.
“The FA Cup is a brilliant competition to be a part of but the added spice of a local derby will make the game even more special for us. As the home side, the onus will be on us to force the pace, something that as a team we like to do naturally.”
We are still working on one or two bits of fine-tuning but are confident of being in good shape come Sunday. Either way, it should be an exciting game with both sides preferring the attacking game.’ Andy Williams. TNS Ladies manager.
