This afternoon (Monday October 2 2017), a squad of sixteen Professional Phase (E1) players faced Thomas Telford School at home, in the first round of the Elite Schools and Colleges ESFA Cup.
As Steve Benyon emphasised: “The boys were looking for a positive response after last Wednesday’s disappointing performance – plus the frustration of Sunday’s Welsh Youth Cup game being called off – but knew that we would be in for a huge test against early league leaders Thomas Telford.”
The game started with the visitors on top in the early stages. TNS created some good chances but were punished on the half hour by a Harvey Howell goal.
Not letting heads drop, the probing from the home side continued and five minutes before the break this was rewarded with an equaliser from Tomos Williams.
The second period started well for The New Saints, with some good football being played. After created a number of chances it was a penalty that ultimately decided the tie. Good work from Liam Parry in winning the spot-kick, was capitalised on by Callum Jones who slotted the ball past the keeper.
In the next round the opponents will be either Dudley or Wolverhampton.
Benyon was full of praise for his side following the final whistle: ” It was great to see the boys respond so well after going 1-0 down and being able to create endless chances against a team who had previously not conceded.”
“We now turn our attention to Wednesday’s Category 1 game away to Rochdale, followed by Sunday’s re-arranged Welsh Youth Cup fixture against Caersws.” he concluded.
