Blades Sharper As TNS Ladies Lack Cutting Edge

TNS Ladies travelled to Sheffield United LFC on Sunday (October 22 2017) seeking to add to their collection of wins on the road. However, they came away empty-handed from this difficult fixture, following a frustrating afternoon, which Manager Andy Williams described as a listless display.

TNS never settled into their stride, with Kim Bebbington’s early effort into the side netting the best that The Saints could muster. Indeed, it was The Blades who settled quicker and having dominated the early stages it was no surprise when they went ahead on 19 minutes, with a scruffy goal at the far post that should have been cleared.

TNS created a limited number of chances against a strong Sheffield side who were dominating the game both defensively and offensively.

Emily Ridge went down under a heavy challenge from the Sheffield goalkeeper and moments later The Saints had a goal disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper, who then turned round a Charlotte Canlett free-kick with a smart save as the half drew to a close.

It was TNS however that were caught off guard with a quick counter attack on 40 minutes, which saw the ball squared for an easy tap-in taking Sheffield into the break 2-0 up.

A couple of early second half substitutions, seeing the introduction of Emma Roden and Sara Bengtsson, were unable to turn the tide.

The game was effectively over on 75 minutes, when a punt from the Sheffield goalkeeper saw the centre forward race through to lob the stranded Stacey Garnham for 3-0.

Moments later it was 4-0 as another cross was turned in, with the TNS defence at sixes and sevens.

A frustrated Andy Williams spoke afterwards: “This was a well-organised Sheffield side who fully deserved the three points but if I’m honest we have not played to our capabilities today.

We have a key run of games coming up against all of the top sides, and if we have ambitions of any sorts this season then these are the games we have to perform in.

I am so disappointed today I am struggling for words.

I coach the side and I pick the team so the buck stops fully at my door – that is something I will examine over the coming days as I expect better from myself and my team.”

Many thanks to Andy Williams for compiling the report.
