MATCH REPORT BY DAVID FIGG

After the previous Sunday’s historic 2-1 win away to Newcastle United Women in the FA Womens Cup 3rd Round Proper, The New Saints Ladies’ return to league action saw them record a 5-0 home win over bottom of the table Leicester City Ladies in their FA Womens Premier League Midlands Division 1 clash at Park Hall Stadium on Sunday.

Saints went into the game on the back of a 7 match winning run in all competitions which had seen them lying in 2nd place in the table, a point behind leaders Loughborough Foxes Women who had taken over top spot from Saints the previous Sunday whilst Andy Williams’s side were in cup action.

Meanwhile, Leicester City Ladies had gone into Sunday’s game on the back of a 1-1 away league draw with Rotherham United Ladies the previous Sunday to earn their first point of the season after a run of 15 straight defeats in all competitions which had seen them firmly rooted to the foot of the table.

Saints eventually took the lead with exactly 16 completed minutes played when, from Charlotte Canlett’s free kick on the right, City failed to clear their lines and the ball eventually dropped to Emily Ridge, who sent her left foot shot from 18 yards looping into City keeper Amie Cattell’s right hand corner.

It was 2-0 in the 20th minute when Laura Morris ran down the right before crossing to Ridge, whose right foot shot from 6 yards hit the bar and looped up before dropping to Kim Bebbington who headed home from 5 yards.

It was 3-0 in the 27th minute when Holly Turbill’s great diagonal cross-field ball from middle to right found Morris who ran down the right and cut into the box before rounding Cattell and slotting her right foot shot with the outside her boot into the keeper’s right hand corner for a superb individual goal.

It was 4-0 a second into the 3rd minute of added time at the end of the half when sub Sarah Jackson ran down the left before pulling the ball back low to Morris, who took a touch and squared infield to Canlett who took a touch before sending her right foot shot from 20 yards into Cattell’s top right hand corner for a great strike.

Both sides made a change to start the second half with Sara Bengtsson coming on for Morris and City bringing on Shania Sheridan for Mathilda Fidler.

What proved to be the final goal of the afternoon came in the 76th minute when Chloe Wilkinson’s corner from the left to the near post found Louisa Anderson who sent her header from 16 yards into Cattell’s right hand corner to make it 5-0.

The final blast of referee Andy Davies’ whistle right on time brought proceedings to a close and with news coming through soon afterwards that title rivals Loughborough Foxes Women had won 6-0 at home to Long Eaton United Ladies, Saints remain in 2nd place a point behind Loughborough who also have a game in hand.
