This weekend just gone, we completed our Academy Winter Futsal, with our U10s and U11s in action at GAP Futsal in Deeside, writes Jason Brindley .
Our U11s were particularly impressive and Joe Drummond was in exceptional form, especially against Connah’s Quay Nomads. We really enjoy the Futsal programme with our Academy. I think it’s good to enhance players’ decision making. Everything is quick due to the small pitch size so that decision making process must be quicker.
And it’s not just decision making in terms of whether to pass or dribble but more constant, like scanning or painting pictures. Off the ball, when to engage, for example. Due to it being 5v5 there are lots more opportunities to attack/defend, 1v1, more touches of the ball etc. It’s fast and furious and I know the players really enjoy it.
That now concludes our Academies Futsal programme, with the exception of our U14s and U16s who travel to Cardiff to participate in the National Finals on the 18th of February.
Away from Futsal, our youngest age group, our Under 7’s, were in action, making the journey to north Wales to face Rhyl FC. Our under-7s have been with us all season and we are now arranging multiple fixtures for them to demonstrate what they have been working on and learning through our training programme, and putting it into practice via matches.
Despite the weather conditions our Young Saints were brilliant. They played good football and already show a good understanding of our club’s DNA and playing style. They are brilliant, our U7s, there are some great little characters in the group and they are a credit to the club. Next week they travel to face Newtown, before a mini festival on the 17th of February at Park Hall Stadium.
Our Under 8s travelled to renowned English Football League Academy Crewe Alexandra for a development fixture. Crewe have a good track record of producing fine footballers. Our young Saints again played some great football throughout. It was a good experience and we thank Crewe for the fixture; we look forward to taking other age groups there in the near future.
Unfortunately all other age fixtures fell foul of the weather, with our U16s being cancelled against Airbus and our U9/11/13/15s against Tranmere Rovers. We will look to arrange again in the near future.
Next week all age groups return to action with an action-packed week ahead for our Academy.
