TNS Ladies Progress In The Tom Farmer Shropshire County Cup

Tom Farmer Shropshire County Cup Semi-Final

Ellesmere Ladies 0 The New Saints Ladies 9

March 14 2018

The New Saints Ladies overcame not only a determined Ellesmere Ladies but also the conditions, as a windy Wem proved to be a formidable opponent in itself.

The Tom Farmer Shropshire County Cup semi-final, played at Wem Town FC, saw Andy Williams’ side progress into the final of the competition. Although TNS dominated the first period, until the 43rd minute it was just the one goal that divided the sides, as Sarah Jackson beat the keeper to the ball with 19 minutes gone to put the Saints ahead.

A ball in from Lia Lewis just before the break found Charlotte Canlett, who slotted past the Ellesmere goalkeeper. This was followed by a third TNS goal a couple of minutes later, right on the stroke of halftime, as the captain scored her second with a great strike that hit the back of the net.

The opening quarter of an hour of the second period, like the first half before it, remained goalless. However, once Sarah Jackson scored her second – and TNS’ fourth – in the 60th minute, the proverbial floodgates opened.

Just one minute later, Charlotte Canlett completed her hat-trick. Two minutes on, Holly Turbill found the net, followed by second- half substitute Laura Morris as The New Saints Ladies made it seven. Although the Ellesmere keeper – who had an excellent game – managed to get to the ball, she wasn’t able to do anything other than to assist it into the net.

Holly Turbill scored her second in the 68th minute, with Sophie Edwards making it 9-0 six minutes on as she struck the ball well from inside the box.
