Although our season, as far as the first team anyway, came to an end last week at Park Hall when we welcomed Cardiff Metropolitan University FC, we have been keeping an eye on developments across Europe.
A result on the continent today has had consequences for The New Saints of Oswestry Town, as media team member, Sam Wood, explains:
As a result of Spartak Trnava being victorious in their pursuit of the Slovakian championship this afternoon, we can now confirm that The New Saints will be seeded in the 1st qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, when the draw is made on the 19th of June.
This means that we will avoid big-hitters such as Celtic and Red Star Belgrade, both former European Cup winners, and Ludogorets Razgrad, who’ve reached the Champions League group stage twice in the last four years.
In recent seasons, there were just four potential opponents for the Saints to face in the first round, but due to reformatting this year, there are now a possible 17 teams for Scott Ruscoe’s side to be drawn against.
Keep an eye out across our website and social media in the coming weeks, as we’ll bring you more on the possible teams and destinations we could be travelling to this summer.
