Match report by Harry Wright

Greg Draper was the hat-trick hero for The New Saints as they beat Aberystwyth Town 4-0.

There was just one change to The New Saints’ line-up after their mid-week win over Connah’s Quay.

The New Saints got the game of to a fantastic start after Greg Draper put them one-nil up after six minutes.

The ball was put into the box and Greg Draper popped up to put the ball past Chris Mullock.

Aberystwyth Town were no shrinking violets though, and just a few minutes later they nearly equalised from a Ryan Wade effort.

Wade found himself through on goal after a sloppy TNS pass was intercepted, but put his shot just wide of the goal and Paul Harrison needn’t have worried.

But it was to be TNS who would take advantage, after Draper scored again in the 21st minute.

Draper was unmarked in the box, and found himself on the end of a brilliant cross. Mullock looked like he might have got a touch to it, but the header was inch perfect and TNS were 2-0 up.

The New Saints affirmed their lead in the 32nd minute with a thunderbolt from Chris Marriott.

Marriott picked up the ball some 20 yards outside of goal and struck it with power, comprehensively defeating Mullock.

At half time it was The New Saints who were firmly in command, leading Aberystwyth Town three goals to nil.

Aberystwyth had occasional spells of control, and but for a great save from Harrison could have had at least one.

But TNS were clinical, and found themselves deservedly in front.

In the second half TNS continued their assault on the Aberystwyth goal, with Marriott blasting a shot into the side netting.

Draper was denied his hat-trick ten minutes into the second half, with Mullock tipping his shot wide of the goal.

Aberystwyth deserved credit for their resilience in the second half, with a few corners highlighting their attacking intent.

Aberystwyth were solid in defence all the way up to the 83rd minute, when Greg Draper finished off a wonderful move to make it four-nil to The New Saints.

It was a less spectacular effort than Marriott’s earlier, but it was a goal that Draper would be happy with as it confirmed his first hat-trick of the season.

As extra time rolled in TNS never looked like conceding a goal, and in the end were soundly the victors.
