Brobbel Brilliance After Edwards Excels – The New Saints 3 Bangor City 0
A well-executed Aeron Edwards brace was topped off by a superb curling finish from Ryan Brobbel, as The New Saints of Oswestry Town extended the lead at top of the JD Welsh Premier League to fourteen points.
With much at stake for both sides, chances were limited in the first period. Luke Wall, had an opportunity in the 12th minute to fire the visitors into the lead as Gary Taylor-Fletcher fed him in the box. His shot was straight at the TNS goalkeeper and captain though, as Paul Harrison dealt with the effort comfortably.
Three minutes later it was his opposite number Matthew Hall’s turn to join the action. A through ball to Simon Spender in the box saw the keeper first to it as the deadlock remained unbroken.
A lively Dean Ebbe was forced out wide down TNS’ left as we passed the halfway mark in the first period. A good ball in found the incoming Chris Marriott, only for the full-back’s shot to go well over.
More good play from the home side saw a number of chances in the box defended well by Bangor City, as they maintained the status quo. The resultant corner from Brobbel saw Tom Holland’s left footed shot go high and over.
Both sides looked to take an early lead in the second half. A low shot from Edwards was pushed behind by Hall to his left for a corner, followed by Wall finding Dean Rittenberg, as the Bangor number ten saw his attempt on goal ending off-target.
Spender again created an opportunity as his run saw him in the box, only for his shot to go straight at Hall.
A minute later though the opening goal for the reigning JD Welsh Premier League champions came, as a well-taken, close-range effort from Edwards gave Hall no chance. 1-0
Three minutes on, from a corner, a header from Connell Rawlinson forced the Bangor keeper into action as he tipped the ball over the bar. With the game at the two-thirds stage, Ebbe chased a through ball that Hall did well to smother.
The second goal finally arrived though in the 63rd minute. A ball into the box by Marriott down TNS’ left was met by Edwards at the far post who put it past the keeper, as Scott Ruscoe saw his side extend their lead. 2-0
Although The Citizens looked to get back into the game, it wasn’t to be, and the third and final goal belonged to Brobbel as he curled it past Hall into the back of the net. The goal was the icing on the cake, not only for The New Saints but also to cap a solid performance from the Northern Ireland U-21 international. 3-0
