The New Saints Ladies 3 Shrewsbury Town Ladies 1 – Match Report

THE NEW SAINTS LADIES 3-1 SHREWSBURY TOWN LADIES
FA WOMEN’S CUP 3RD QUALIFYING ROUND
PLAYED AT FOXEN MANOR, FOUR CROSSES
SUNDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2017

The New Saints Ladies are through to the 1st Round Proper of the FA Women’s Cup after a 3-1 home win over county rivals Shrewsbury Town Ladies in their 3rd Qualifying Round clash at Foxen Manor, Four Crosses on Sunday.

In a match that was switched from Park Hall Stadium to Four Crosses, it saw Saints put one over on their former manager Pete Wilson (now Technical Director for Shrewsbury Town Ladies) as the hosts earned local bragging rights in a match dubbed ‘the A5 derby’ which had been eagerly awaited since the draw was made.

Saints had gone into the game on the back of a 7-1 home league win over Burton Albion Ladies in the FA Women’s Premier League Midlands Division 1 the previous Sunday. Meanwhile, Shrewsbury went into Sunday’s game on the back of having their unbeaten start to the season ended on the same day with a 2-3 away defeat by Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies in the West Midlands League Premier Division.

Indeed, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 11th minute when Beth Francis’s throw in from the right found Katie Doster who volleyed across the goalmouth for Tania Prior to fire her low right foot shot from 8 yards into Saints keeper Stacey Garnham’s right hand corner.

Saints eventually equalised in the 40th minute when Laura Morris’s cross from the right to the far post found Kim Bebbington who headed into Town keeper Beth Cleveley’s right hand corner to send the sides level going into the half time break.

Saints went 2-1 up in the 52nd minute when Louisa Anderson’s cross from the right found Morris whose cushioned header behind the Town back line found Emily Ridge, who fired her low right foot shot from 8 yards into Cleveley’s right hand corner.

It was 3-1 in the 63rd minute when Sophie Davies’ throw in on the right found Charlotte Canlett who crossed from the right for Bebbington to head into Cleveley’s right hand corner from 3 yards.

It was a battling performance by Saints who showed determination and positivity to come back from their early setback and make it safely through to the next round at the expense of their old rivals.
