The New Saints thrashed Rhyl 5-1 thanks to goals from Chris Seargeant, Matty Williams, Kai Edwards, Ryan Fraughan and Mike Wilde. The romp ensured that the Oswestry based side will now face a trip away to Haverfordwest County, in the FAW Welsh Cup.
With the rain pouring down at Park Hall throughout the match, the opening exchanges between the two sides didn’t bring much goal action but midway through the half, Seargeant watched his wicked corner bounce in to the back of the net, to give the home side the lead.
Moments later, Matty Williams collected the ball, after a terrible clearance from Danny Jones in the Rhyl goal and calmly passed it into the open goal, which gave Craig Harrison and his team a two goal advantage at the break.
The visitors came out fighting in the second half and after only a minute in, David Forbes tapped in due to TNS failing to clear a corner.
However, despite Rhyl throwing everything at The Saints, the equaliser never came and instead the Welsh Champions extended their lead thanks to a brilliant cross from the former Everton man, Seargeant which set up a superb finish from the young Edwards.
With ten minutes left, Fraughan struck an unstoppable shot into the top corner to make it four and substitute Wilde completed the rout with a placed finish, after being brilliantly slipped in by fellow sub, Alex Darlington.
