Saints Youth Bow Out On Penalties

The New Saints of Oswestry Town Under 19’s lost out to Cardiff City after a dramatic penalty shoot out at the Cardiff International Sport Stadium.

Steve Evans’ Saints went into the game on the back of a season-long unbeaten streak that consisted of 13 wins and one draw in all competitions.

Clear-cut chances were in short supply in the first half, with City narrowly edging the best play.

Robbie Patten’s fierce shot from 20 yards drew a fine save from The Saints’ Andy Wycherley early on in the game.

The Saints fashioned two chances of their own through Nyasha Mwamuka, who beat his mean before unleashing a shot from the edge of the box which was gathered by City goalkeeper Joe Massaro.

In the 42nd minute, Mwamuka then met a Dylan Jones’ throw in but sent his effort sailing past the left upright.

A succession of chances feel to both sides in the second half, though good saves from both goalkeepers and some poor finishing meant that neither team could make a breakthrough.

A similar pattern emerged in extra time, which culminated in the game going to penalties.

Massaro’s fine save from Jordan Wells’ penalty proved decisive after City converted all their spot kicks to earn themselves a semi-final place.

Evans was extremely proud of his players after the match and said, ‘I am so proud of my players who gave everything they have. We played really well and I was delighted with the way in which we applied ourselves.’
