TNS Ladies Complete Double

The New Saints Ladies completed a League and Cup double after overcoming Lye Town at Stone Dominoes FC on Sunday.

After the Saints lifted the league title last weekend at Wednesfield Town their attention turned to a tie against one of only two sides to take points against them this season, having previously drawn 0-0 at Lye.

Town will find themselves hard done by, after Hannah Yates was bustled off the ball, the resulting Lye cross was headed into the net, only to see the linesman’s flag. The Saints grew ever more into the game and chances started to come. Maddie Jones came close after a break into the box down the right hand side saw Emily Ridge fire directly at the goalkeeper. Lye Town looked dangerous on the counter attack, but the Saints defence limited the number of shots on Ceri Evan’s goal. This resilience then saw the Saints come into their own creating numerous chances before a through ball by Sophie Davies saw Emily Ridge drive into the box before being taken out by the Lye defender. Sarah Burke smashed home the resulting penalty giving the Saints a half time lead.

Full of confidence, the Saints continued the second half as they had ended the first and within three minutes Sarah Burke doubled the Saints lead. Maddie Jone’s corner was cleared straight back to her, the resulting cross saw Burke leap to head the ball, beating the Lye defender and goalkeeper, with the ball finishing in the roof of the net. The Shropshire side then applied pressure as they looked to add to their lead. The Saints then pushed for more and it would be leading goal scorer Emily Ridge that would find the back of the net next. Charlotte Canlett’s through ball found Ridge who shot rattled the cross bar and left hand post before finding its way over the line. The Saints rounded off the scoring through substitute Sam Berry in stoppage time. Amy Tomei chipped a ball over the top of the Lye defence to find Berry who calmly side footed the ball over the goalkeeper to complete the double win.

After the game manager Joe Thompson commented, “What a game. We started very slow and Lye got a goal that no one else thought was offside, luckily for us the linesman did. After that though we showed what we can do. Buzzing to have got the double and now we focus on getting the third trophy of the year”.

The Saints now face Kingshurst Sporting Club Ladies away next Sunday in the final game of the league season before their Shropshire cup final on Thursday 5th May.
