Tracking Tom At Airbus – Rev's Ramblings

I enjoy setting challenges and one that I’m currently working through is to take in 100 matches this season. Obviously, being at every TNS game helps. Including friendlies and the various cup games, that alone will make up about half the total.

Last Friday I added Airbus UK Broughton v Cefn Druids to the list. Not that I went there just to watch the game though, I didn’t. With Phil Baker and Robbie Parry out on loan recently to Aberystwyth Town and Llandudno respectively, it was good to catch up with Tom Matthews.

On a season-long loan up in Flintshire, Tom has played 17 games so far this season. Taking into account he was out injured earlier, he’s certainly been a regular. The intention was to cover the game from Tom’s perspective.

Well, he was on the bench! Not only was I caught out but Tom’s mom, Dawn, had made the trip from Norfolk to watch him. However, she was there for the weekend and I covered the evening anyway, so for neither of us was it a waste of time.

I took a few photos, and along with a post-match interview on the pitch, put together a piece for the TNS website that you can read BY CLICKING HERE.

I also shared the press box with Dafabet Welsh Premier League Secretary, Gwyn Derfel. I have a lot of respect for Gwyn and the work he does and it was great to share a couple of hours with him.

It was a long journey home and by the time I had a cup of tea, chat with my wife etc, it was 1.30 am by the time I finally retired. To most people, working in the world of football sounds glamorous but once the honeymoon period wears off you need more than glitz and sparkle.

Fortunately I’m still on the right side of the line, and coming to the end of my third full season at TNS, any initial novelty factor has long since gone. The passion and enthusiasm is genuine and deep-rooted. Long may it continue.

Rev’s Ramblings is a weekly insight into my work at TNS, from a personal perspective. Make sure you check it out every Monday!
