The New Saints FC v Bala Town FC – Match Preview

The reigning JD Welsh Premier League champions are back in action on Saturday (August 19 2017), as they look to kick-start their season following the opening day defeat at Bangor City.

The visitors in the first game of the season at Park Hall, making the thirty mile journey from the traditional county of Merionethshire, are Bala Town.

Last season produced two ties in particular that fans of both clubs – and beyond – will remember for years to come. The final fixture of the league season at Maes Tegid saw TNS involved in their second ten-goal game of the campaign.

JD Welsh Premier League action returns to Park Hall

Having previously beaten Rhyl FC 10-0 at Park Hall, this time the goals were shared around more equally. Not exactly though, as The New Saints ran out 6-4 winners in the end.

The goalscorers for the reigning champions were Ryan Brobbel, Adrian Cieslewicz and Robbie Parry, grabbing one goal each, with now-departed Scott Quigley chipping in with a hat-trick.

In the last game of the season, the JD Welsh Cup final a week later at Bangor University Stadium, the Lakesiders finally got the win that has evaded them over the years as they beat TNS 2-1 to lift the trophy.

Following their MD1 3-0 victory at home to Newtown AFC, Bala are third in the table, while the Saints find themselves in a very unfamiliar eighth spot.

We caught up with Chris Marriott this week to chat about the fixture,  putting it to him that although it’s early in the season it’s still an important game, to which he replied, “Every game’s a big game for us; we want three points from every single game we play.”

“We had a disappointing defeat last week but we’ll be going for a win this time round.” Commenting on the opponents and giving them respect, he continued, “It will be a tough game as always. Theyre fit, they’re strong, they’re very well organised. They will come for the three points and give it a real go.”

Out injured at the moment, we also asked him for an update as to when he is likely to be back in full training. “As soon as possible” was his reply, the adding that it’s likely to be about 4-6 weeks.

The kick-off is 5.15 pm with the game live on S4C’s Sgorio. In addition, we will be bringing you commentary, as always,  on TNS Radio. The link to listen can be found via ‘News’ at the head of this page.
