A convincing display from TNS Ladies earlier today (Sunday, August 20 2017) opened the season’s account with three valuable points.
The home side was the quickest out of the blocks, with three early goals in the first quarter of an hour. The openers were from Kim Bebbington and Emily Ridge, supplemented with a sharp poacher’s effort from Emma Roden.
The only blot on the copy book was a sloppy goal conceded (at 3-0) as Steel City enjoyed a short period of pressure.
Two further goals though around the half hour mark gave the home side an impressive 5-1 half time score-line. Firstly, Roden found the net again following excellent play down the right and a cross from Ridge.
Secondly, it was the provider turning scorer, as Ridge finished off some clever combination play with a low finish.
The visitors tightened up in the second period as they thwarted TNS attacks. A strong finish though from the penalty spot saw Sophie Davies extend the lead, following a foul on Ridge in the box.
TNS’ prolific goal-scorer, Emily Ridge, secured her hat-trick five minutes later with a smart finish, as she fought off the attention of a determined Steel City defence,
Sophie Davies rounded off a great display five minutes from time, shooting past the goalkeeper from eighteen-yards.
Manager, Andy Williams, expressed his delight after the game: “The performance is everything we hoped for, but the result exceeded our expectation by a long way. I am thrilled for the girls that their hard work pre-season has been rewarded with a valuable three points.”
Looking ahead to the next game, he concluded: “Today is a real fillip for us all, but we will be back on the training ground this week seeking further progress.”
