Cefn Druids U19s 0 The New Saints FC U19s 1 – Off To A Good Start

On Sunday 27th August 2017, 16 of the the new Professional Phase squad travelled to Cefn Druids to take part in the first JD Welsh Premier League Development fixture of the season. The stage was set for a tough game, against a team that contained a number of ex-TNS Academy players.

Although the average age of the squad was just 16 years of age, the players played some neat and tidy football. There was a constant probing of the Druids’ rearguard and they were rewarded just before half-time through a cool Harry Bower finish into the bottom corner.

With numerous opportunities created but not taken advantage of, this gave hope to the Druids, who then made openings of their own. An in-form Aaron Jones maintained TNS’ slender advantage though.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first period, with more glorious chances missed; the players, however,  managed to hold on to the 1-0 scoreline to get off to a good start.

Following the match, Steve Benyon was quick to praise not only his own team but also the opposition, “Credit to our players as well as Druids, who will certainly be up there at the end of the season.”

“Now on to next week’s training programme in preparation for Sunday’s game at home to Conwy.” he continued.

All managers, at whatever level, enjoy the headache of having a strong, healthy and competitive squad, and Steve confirmed that’s the case at Park Hall, “What was also pleasing was to see how many other players missed out on the squad who certainly deserve a place. It  goes to show the real strength in depth I have at my disposal.”
