TNS / North Shropshire College Professional Phase team played Newcastle-under-Lyme in the second round of the Colleges Trophy. The game was at Park Hall on Monday, October 9 2017.
Against strong opposition, and with the majority of the TNS squad yet to face players from Category 1 standard, it was always going to be a tough challenge.
The home side started very well though, creating lots of chances. None of the opportunities were taken, however, and the deadlock was still be broken as the half-time whistle went.
Two very quick goals from the visitors saw them take the second period by the scruff of its neck, as sloppy defending allowed them to take the lead.
Heads didn’t drop though and Harry Bower – who made his senior TNS debut last Tuesday at Flint Town United in the Nathaniel MG Cup – pulled one back.
Unfortunately though, although chances were created, none were taken, and the final score was 2-1 to Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Steve Benyon was philosophical in defeat: “It was very pleasing to see all the boys perform extremely well against much higher opposition. With a few tweaks, the boys can now start to believe that they are continuing to develop at a fast pace. We now turn our attentions to Wednesday’s category 1 and 3 games against Thomas Telford and South and City.”
