On Saturday (January 20 2018), The New Saints of Oswestry Town take on Cardiff Metropolitan University FC in the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup (Welsh League Cup). At Aberystwyth Town’s Park Avenue, this will be the 13th final hosted at the venue since the inception of the competition in the 1992/1993 season.
Although this will be The Archers’ first appearance in a Welsh League Cup final, on the other hand The New Saints are seasoned representatives. Saturday’s game will be the tenth time that TNS have reached that stage, with an impressive eight wins and just one defeat to date.
The only blot on an otherwise impressive copybook came in the 2012/2013 season, when Carmarthen Town ran out winners. That followed a penalty shoot-out which the Old Gold won 3-1, as the final whistle of open play saw the sides tied at 3-3.
Interestingly, TNS’ appearances in the final have seen all three incarnations of Llansantffraid, Total Network Solutions and The New Saints lift the trophy.
The current holders of the competition, TNS have won the last three finals with a very impressive record of 3-0, 4-0 and 2-0 against Bala Town, Denbigh Town and Barry Town United respectively.
Following a trophy-laden career as a player and an assistant, Saturday’s Nathaniel MG Cup final is the first opportunity that Scott Ruscoe has to add silverware to his new employment as a manager.
The game kicks off at 5.15 p.m. and is being shown live on S4C. TNS Radio will be bringing commentary from Park Avenue and you can find the link here on the home page of our website.
