Update From The TNS System With Steve Benyon

Following last weekend’s victory over Newtown, it was back to business as usual for The New Saints FC Professional Phase players, with multiple fixtures across the board, writes Steve Benyon.

On Wednesday afternoon, the E1 squad travelled to Lancashire to face Accrington and Rossendale in the final Category 1 league game before the play-off split. We scored 2 well-worked goals but unfortunately conceded 3 soft goals to lose the game 3-2. The E2 squad travelled to Walsall and came away convincing 13-0 winners to ensure Si and Kieran’s side remained top of Category 3.

Friday saw a mixed side face Adams Grammar of Newport in the semi-final of the Shropshire County Cup. Taking no risks we fielded a strong side consisting of cat 1 and cat 3 players, and the boys certainly delivered, running out 12-1 winners to book a final spot later in the month against last year’s winners Thomas Telford. What was pleasing to see was players playing for the first time together and looking like a squad.

Sunday saw the Under 19’s travel to Airbus knowing a win would put the title firmly in our sights. However, after dominating first half proceedings and failing to make the endless amount of chances created count, we conceded a sloppy goal in the 53rd minute. The boys rallied back to again create guilt edge chances, but were punished in the 93rd minute with an Airbus goal from the half-way line. The final score finished 2-0 to Airbus, yet we dust ourselves off and go again.

This week, on Tuesday, we faced Heart of Worcestershire at home, with a win required to cement top of the table in Category 3. The boys put in their best performance of the season, running out comfortable 5-0 winners to forge their place at the top of the table. A huge well done to the boys and Kieran and Si.

Yesterday saw the E1 squad face Barnsley away in the play-offs. After a disastrous start conceding 3 goals, the boys worked extremely hard to gain 2 goals back, but unfortunately couldn’t find the all important equaliser.

Sunday sees the boys travel to Prestatyn in the Welsh Premier Development League, hopefully to get 3 points.
