JD WELSH PREMIER DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE (NORTH)
PLAYED AT PARK HALL STADIUM, OSWESTRY
THURSDAY 22ND MARCH 2018
MATCH REPORT BY DAVID FIGG
The New Saints Under 19 team kept alive their hopes of winning the JD Welsh Premier Development League (North) title with a 4-0 home win over Bala Town Under 19s at Park Hall Stadium last Thursday.
Saints had gone into the game on the back of a 0-2 away defeat by leaders and main title rivals Airbus UK Broughton in their last game 11 days previously which had ended a 7 match unbeaten run to leave Saints in 2nd place, 4 points behind Airbus but with 3 games in hand over The Wingmakers.
Meanwhile, Bala had gone into the game on the back of a win and a draw in the previous 2 games to leave The Lakesiders in 4th place, level on points with 3rd placed Connah’s Quay Nomads (but with a far inferior goal difference and having played a game more) and 5 points behind Saints.
The hosts took the lead in just the 5th minute when James Parry’s square ball from left to middle found Kevin Kauber who turned and beat his man before having his right foot shot from 25 yards blocked by a defender, with the ball rebounding to Kauber who fired his low right foot shot from 18 yards into Bala keeper Ryan Goldston’s right hand corner.
Then in the 55th minute, Bala defender Daffyd Evans was shown a straight red card by referee Nathan Bartram for kicking out at James Parry to leave the visitors to battle on with 10 men.
Saints made a double change in the 63rd minute when Curtis Weetman came on to replace Matt Cole and Callum Jones came on to replace Liam Ihekwoaba.
It was eventually 2-0 just into the 65th minute when Dennis Bates’ low square ball from middle to right found Weetman whose low ball down the right found Kauber, who ran into the box and beat one man before firing a low right foot angled drive from 8 yards through Goldston’s legs into his right hand corner.
Saints made their final change in the 73rd minute when GuyGuy Maboy came on to replace Kauber.
It was 3-0 in the 79th minute when Maboy ran through on the left and into the box before being taken out on the back of his leg by Town defender Daniel Bath, referee Bartram had no option but to award a penalty and Jones stepped up to calmly fire the resulting spot kick past Goldston.
It was 4-0 in the 82nd minute when Bala’s Rhys Rowlands’ header away fell to Jones on the Saints right who took a touch before seeing his low cross diverted into his own net from 6 yards by Glenn Rose for an own goal.
That proved to be the end of the scoring and the final blast of referee Bartram’s whistle after 84 seconds of added time at the end brought the game to a close to leave Saints just a point behind leaders Airbus with 2 games in hand.
