With no games last weekend due to JD Welsh Cup action – that saw Aberystwyth Town edge Newtown AFC 2-1 and Connah’s Quay Nomads beat Bangor City 6-1 – it’s back to business this Friday (April 13, 2018) for The New Saints as we travel to Maes Tegid.
This will be the fourth and final JD Welsh Premier League encounter between TNS and Bala Town, with the three previous games all ending 3-0 to the champions.
The first, way back in August 2017, saw a goalless first half at Park Hall. Coming on as a substitute for the injured Steve Saunders, Blaine Hudson broke the deadlock, with Wes Fletcher chipping in with a brace.
The first match of 2018, at Maes Tegid, again had the teams going into the break 0-0. Fletcher once again got his name on the scoresheet, along with Chris Marriott and Ryan Brobbel.
Back at Park Hall last month it was almost a Groundhog Day moment, but Brobbel’s goal in the 45th minute brought the 0-0 half-time run to an end. A brace from Ebbe though ensured that the final score of 3-0 continued.
Going into Friday’s game, Colin Caton’s side have slipped considerably in recent weeks in their pursuit of second place in the league. Although still mathematically possible, with just three games to go and five points behind Connah’s Quay Nomads and Bangor City, it is certainly a tall order.
The New Saints, on the other hand, have the luxury of a thirteen point lead over the aforementioned sides that occupy second and third respectively, albeit with the Nomads and Citizens separated only by goal difference.
