Although the season for me began when the players returned to training in the first week of June, last week felt like it started proper. The UEFA Champions League draw is always a reminder that success means the TNS season is a long one indeed.
At Park Hall, along with others, I watched the draw live on the screen. As far as the opponents themselves are concerned, it will be a tough tie but nevertheless one that is winnable. I think the squad that Scott and Evo (Ruscoe and Evans) have assembled is capable of more than holding their own against the Macedonian champions.
Following a message from Nick Southall, I was at the BBC Radio Shropshire office in Shrewsbury in the afternoon. Live on air talking about the draw, it was a great opportunity to showcase the club.
With the Champions League preparations in full flow, it was good to welcome fellow European qualifiers, Cefn Druids, to Park Hall for a friendly. Although we’ve played a couple of games so far – one at Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy and the other an in-house game in Portugal – this one was a step up.
Open to the public and with BBC Cymru paying us a visit it was a good evening, with the 1-0 win a positive result. It was great to welcome BBC’s Tom Brown and Aled Williams, who had travelled from Cardiff and Wrexham respectively, as they filmed in and around the game. The lead image is Tom in the dressing room as the players are on their way out for the match itself.
TNS Radio also made its debut and we had a good variety of guests on air with us. From fans to the chairman to players, it was all very good. If you’d like to join us on air during the coming season, here’s a piece that we published last week: Join Us On TNS Radio In 2018/2019 – All Are Welcome
I’m looking forward to the coming days, weeks and months. It definitely feels like we are in full flow now and I have the feeling that it’s going to be a very good season indeed for The New Saints.
