Following the narrow 5-4 defeat on aggregate in the Champions League against FK Shkëndija, it’s another bite of the European cherry for The New Saints, as we take on Lincoln Red Imps in the Europa League.
The champions of Gibraltar, like TNS, began life in UEFA’s premier club competition. Featuring in the new-look preliminary round, they beat the Sammarinese side Fiorita 2-0 before losing out 4-1 to the Kosovan champions, FC Drita.
Founded in 1976, the year that saw a heatwave in the UK, the resignation of Harold Wilson as Prime Minister, the start – and end – of the Cod War and the birth of punk rock, since then the Red Imps have gone on to dominate football in the British Overseas Territory.
They have won 23 league titles as well as 18 Gibraltar League Senior Cup wins, 17 Rock Cup final victories and have 11 Pepe Reyes trophies to their name.
The highlight of Lincoln’s European adventures to date was the 1-0 victory against Scotland’s Celtic in the Champions League. The 2016 first leg victory however was followed by a 3-0 defeat in Glasgow that saw Brendan Rodgers’ blushes saved, as the defeat in Gibraltar was his first competitive game in charge.
The tie between The New Saints and Lincoln Red Imps kicks off at Park Hall on Thursday, July 26 2018 at 7.00 p.m.
