After seeing off Barry Town United in the JD Welsh Premier League, focus immediately switches back to Thursday’s UEFA Europa League tie, as The New Saints seek to overturn last week’s defeat to FC Midtjylland at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Losing a goal after just nine minutes, following Paul Onuachu’s towering header, was a less than ideal way to start the match, and it soon got worse with 27 gone, as he rose high to notch a second.
The 6ft 7’ Nigerian striker caused problems right from the off, as The Saints struggled to contend with his aerial presence at set-pieces. That’s something that Scott Ruscoe’s side will have to combat, should they wish to get anything from the tie.
Of course, FC Midtjylland hold all of the cards, having scored two priceless away goals in the capital last Thursday.
Just one goal for the Danish Champions would leave TNS needing three, making an already difficult task just that little bit harder.
An early away goal though and the hosts could start to worry. TNS had plenty of chances to register themselves on the scoresheet last week, while Midtjylland struggled to create in open play.
Scott Ruscoe will also be eager to see his side be more clinical. He would’ve been frustrated last week to see his team fail to convert at least one of those chances they had.
Overturning a 2-0 deficit against a side that beat Manchester United at home two years ago will certainly prove to be difficult, but as is often found to be the case in football – anything can happen.
As ever, TNS Radio will be live from Denmark, going on air just a few minutes before Thursday’s 6pm (UK) kickoff time.
