This coming Saturday (August 25) we host Carmarthen Town in the JD Welsh Premier League (JD WPL). The last encounter between the sides took place on November 25 2017, also a league game at Park Hall.
Having already beaten the Old Gold 5-0 on the road a couple of months previously, the reigning JD WPL champions again scored five. However, it was anything but an easy victory, as the visitors made it very difficult for Scott Ruscoe’s side.
In fact, the league’s basement side at that time took a 1-0 lead in the second minute. Although Simon Spender cleared, the assistant referee indicated that the ball had crossed the line.
Just fourteen minutes on and Greg Draper scored, and unbeknown to him at the time it was another goal that would eventually see him end the season as JD WPL Golden Boot winner. A cross from the right by Jamie Mullan – who himself would receive the Player Of The Season award – was met by Draper who turned and fired, giving Lee Idzi no chance.
Just six minutes on, now-departed Wes Fletcher found the net in a crowded box. The lead became a comfortable 3-1 as on-loan Ryan Leak met a Fletcher cross.
The cushion lasted just two minutes though as Liam Walsh pulled one back to make it a goal fest for the fans, with five in just twenty seven minutes.
The second half proved to be much tighter as far as goals were concerned and it was only right at the death that The New Saints could relax. A brace from Jamie Mullan on 90 and 90+2 saw Scott Ruscoe’s side leapfrog Bangor City who occupied top spot prior to the game.
The match also saw Ben Clark make his JD WPL debut, coming on for Jon Routledge in the dying seconds.
